The SEISA Kokusai Shonan baseball team lives in a dormitory system. On July 7th, the morning edition of the Asahi Shimbun introduced a unique initiative at the Kouhi dormitory, where the high school baseball players live.

“How can we make our dormitory more comfortable and secure?”

“Yes, we can make our own dormitory as comfortable as a hotel!”

With the support of the teaching staff, the dormitory is now run autonomously by the students. Captain Nakahira is the manager and Vice-Captain Kagawa is the general manager, and we have nine departments, including a sports club department and a restaurant department, in order to create a comfortable environment from the customer's point of view. The management of the KOUHI Hotels is based on real hotels, so every day is like an internship, but with the added bonus of improving your housekeeping skills, making it a real learning experience.

The SEISA Kokusai Shonan baseball team will be competing in the summer Koshien Tournament this year, aiming for the top of the 200 schools in Kanagawa Prefecture. The COVID-19 crisis has made club activities impossible. Despite the many restrictions, the ballplayers are trying to hone their teamwork and win the fierce competition.

“I have cleaned up this area. Please let me know if there are any problems.”

This is the Kouhi dormitory in Nakai Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, where the SEISA Kokusai Shonan athletes live. It was in the autumn of the year before last that we began to think about making vacant rooms available to other teams visiting the camp. Since then, due to the spread of the COVID-19, the dormitory has not been used in any case.

There are nine sections at KOUHI Hotels, and each member of the club belongs to one of them. The Sports Club Section is in charge of managing the physical condition of club members, including daily temperature checks. The restaurant section is in charge of preventing infection by installing acrylic panels in the cafeteria and replenishing disinfectant.

The management of the dormitory is as serious as the practice. When a series of mistakes were made in each section, such as leaving forgotten items behind, Vice Captain KAGAWA refrained from using his cell phone for a month in order to concentrate on his "duties" as general manager and baseball. By doing so, he was able to pay more attention to his friends.

The team finished in the top four in its own tournament last summer, and many of its members remain this year. We want to show them that we are the most united team in Kanagawa," said NAKAHIRA. With the teamwork he has built up during his time as a hive mind, he is on his way to the top for the first time.
